General Brownfield Information

Brownfield sites are abandoned or underutilized properties that require environmental mitigation in order to protect the health and safety of the community. Cleaning up these sites:

  • Help protect community health.

  • Improve the quality of life for residents by reducing sprawl, preserving greenspace and revitalizing communities.

  • Promote economic development by making land available for redevelopment, creating jobs and increasing property values.

The EPA States: Cleaning up contaminants on a brownfield reduces or eliminates potential health risks to residents, workers, pets and the surrounding environment.

Crescent Manor Specific Brownfield Mitigation

  • The plan involves removing impacted soil by digging up to approximately 15 feet below the surface across the site. Any underground objects like storage tanks found during this process will also be removed and disposed of offsite.

  • The plan involves addressing groundwater issues by removing soil (which serves as a source for groundwater pollutants) and treating the water table directly with materials to ELIMINATE the levels of pollutants.  

  • The plan includes preventing vapors from entering future buildings by installing a venting system beneath the structures. This system will safeguard the occupied spaces from any harmful substances.
